Mobile Operating System Security Engineer

Huawei Finland R&D — Telecom R&D center

About the role

The Helsinki System Security Laboratory of the Huawei Finland Research Center has been active in the research and development of system security features for Huawei mobile phones, tablets and other consumer devices. Much of our work revolves around mitigating system security risks by hardening OS kernels, driver subsystems and system runtimes with various software and hardware-assisted technologies and providing critical system security services. Many of our earlier projects power the security of Huawei’s HarmonyOS devices today, and we will keep innovating and conducting advanced system security research as Huawei is investing heavily into the new HarmonyOS Next.
As a part of this effort, we are deeply focused on kernel security, with sanitization at its core. Memory safety bugs in kernel space are uniquely dangerous; because the kernel runs with full privilege, these bugs can compromise the stability and security of the entire system. Sanitizers close this gap by catching these classes of bugs early and deterministically. We are now looking for passionate Mobile Operating System Security Engineers to join us in the mission to build ground breaking mobile system security technologies for the next generation of HarmonyOS. You’ll develop sanitizer infrastructure across core kernel subsystems while also contributing to broader system hardening efforts. We offer great opportunities for talented individuals to work within a team of experienced and energetic researchers and engineers and grow with it.
Responsibilities
Conduct advanced research and development of mobile system security technologies in one or more of the following areas:
· Design, integrate, and maintain kernel sanitizer infrastructure across core kernel subsystems, balancing detection coverage against performance and build overheads.
· Develop hardware-assisted operating system kernel features and compiler technologies to mitigate risks and support hardening of system services, applications, and runtimes.
· Extend sanitizer coverage and apply compiler-based instrumentation to new or existing code paths, including dynamic access control for near-field communication protocols and hardening of the JavaScript engine/runtime.
· Evaluate and adopt emerging sanitizer, memory-safety, and hardware-assisted technologies to strengthen kernel and system hardening efforts.
Where a candidate is expected to:
· Analyze prior art and evaluate existing system security and kernel sanitization technologies.
· Identify new research opportunities and make technology proposals for both sanitization tools and broader OS security features.
· Design and prototype new system security and sanitization technologies with a product-oriented approach.
· Collaborate with internal and/or external research teams.
Requirements
· Masters in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
· Rich experience in system security software design and development.
· Proficiency in English technical writing and presentation.
· Open mindset with strong teamwork spirit and collaboration skills.

We consider the following as advantages
· Understanding of embedded operating system internals, such as virtual memory management, security policies, and access control.
· Proficiency in one or more system programming languages such as Assembly/C/C++/Rust.
· Familiarity with the ArmV8/9 architectures, including their virtual memory architectures and security extensions.
· Understanding of compilers and compiler internals/principles and how they apply to memory safety and instrumentation.
· General understanding of computer security primitives such as isolation, cryptography, and access control.
· Familiarity with threat modeling, attack surface analysis, and vulnerability mitigation techniques.
