About the role

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Bill Pay team at Float. This is a newly separated team within our payments experience domain, with ownership centered on the customer-facing experience of bill pay / accounts payable and adjacent payments related user experiences. The underlying payment rails remain owned elsewhere; this team owns what the customer touches and experiences.

You’ll join at an important moment. The team already has three engineers today and is expected to grow, with a strong product counterpart who brings deep accounts payable expertise. This role is about leading the team to deliver consistently, improve how it operates, and steadily strengthen a high visibility product area that is strategically important.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

- Lead the Bill Pay engineering team across delivery, team operations, people management, and people development.

- Partner closely with Product to make credible quarterly commitments and deliver against them with strong operational rigor.

- Balance near-term product delivery with steady remediation of legacy technical debt and under-the-hood improvements in the existing bill pay foundation.

- Own observability, monitoring, and operational follow-through for the systems and experiences the team is responsible for.

- Raise team effectiveness through clarity, feedback, standards, and development, including healthy execution patterns and sustainable performance expectations.

- Act as a strong counterpart to stakeholders by pushing when necessary, communicating risk clearly, and knowing when to resolve independently versus escalate with context and options.

ABOUT YOU

HERE’S WHAT SETS YOU UP FOR SUCCESS AT FLOAT:

- You Put Customers First, Always. You care deeply about delivering meaningful value. Whether you're building internal systems or customer-facing features, you're always thinking about how to make life better for our users.

- You Act Like an Owner. You take responsibility for outcomes, step up to challenges, and seek solutions proactively—doing what’s best for the business, not just your role.

- You Think Big and Move Fast. You’re energized by building from 0 to 1. You’re not afraid to challenge the status quo, experiment quickly, and learn as you go.

- You Constantly Learn and Grow. You’re hungry to improve your craft and open to feedback. You bring a growth mindset to everything you do.

- You Raise the Bar. You care about doing things well and efficiently. You balance speed with rigor and always look for ways to improve how we work.

- You Win as a Team. You’re a generous collaborator who values communication, context, and shared wins. You lift others up and help make the team stronger.

You’re likely a strong fit for this role if you’re energized by leading a small but meaningful team in a product area where customer experience, operational quality, and business impact are tightly connected. You know how to run a team, not just contribute technically. You can work through ambiguity, partner strongly with Product, and make practical trade-offs in a domain where execution quality matters. This role will particularly reward someone who can combine technical credibility, delivery discipline, and mature stakeholder judgment.

WHAT YOU BRING:

- Engineering management experience in environments where delivery, people leadership, and cross-functional judgment all materially mattered.

- Technical credibility to lead engineers in a full stack domain with evolving system quality needs.

- Experience making and meeting team commitments across quarters, including managing risk, sequencing work, and improving team operations.

- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to push back constructively and escalate clearly when needed.

- Exposure to payments, money movement, or accounting-related workflows is helpful in this role.

- Practical curiosity about AI tools and evidence of using them in real workflows to improve leverage and outcomes.
